The 8x magnification offers the user a good balance between image detail at short to mid-range distances and a wide field of view, making it easier for you to quickly locate and then follow things like erratic and fast moving birds in nearby bushes.
The 42mm objective lenses are a popular choice on binoculars as they have enough surface area to capture a decent amount of light, but at the same time, not so big as to make the binocular overly large and heavy.
